Robert J. (Bob) Merkert has been involved with the card industry for over 20 years. He is currently Director of Sales for CardLogix, Irvine, CA, and is championing the CardLogix Credentsys PIV card for HSPD-12 applications. He is also involved in the GSM, Parking, Healthcare, and Vending marketplaces.
Prior to CardLogix, Bob was Vice President of Sales, Americas, for SCM Microsystems. He had been involved in the development and sales of card readers for Secure Personal ID Systems, as well as PC Security and Network Access applications. He had been very involved with the Department of Defense Common Access Card program, providing thousands of readers for the DOD deployment. In addition to this logical access application Bob was also involved with the development of physical access readers for government applications.
Bob was also involved in many student ID card systems at DANYL Corporation, where he was a co-founder and Executive Vice- President. At DANYL he was a pioneer in deploying smart card vending systems to many of the early pilots at Bank of America, Visa, CoreStates Bank, First Union, and EPS/MAC.
Bob goes back to the early days of smarts cards and the Smart Card Forum, our predecessor organization. Not only has he presented papers at the Annual Conference, he also lead the deployment of the vending systems used at the conference for the first Conference Smart Card. This lead to a subsequent smart card feature on the Good Morning America TV show. He has been a member of the Financial Services, Digital Security Initiative, and Secure Personal ID (SPID) workgroups. His video presentation of the New York Upper West Side trial was a feature at one of the Retail Workgroup meetings. Currently Bob is the vice-chairman of the Smart Card Alliance Physical Access Council, a member of the Alliance Board of Directors and part of the SCA Educational Institute.
Throughout his career Bob has written over fifty papers and articles. In the past several years he has presented 20 papers at smart card conferences around the work. On the lighter side he has published numerous articles on collectible smart cards for MoneyCard Collector. His bi-monthly column was entitled The Scoop on Chips.
Bob has received the Meritorious Service Award from the IEEE Computer Society for his many years of dedicated service to the International Test Conference. He served as the conference’s General Chairman and Program chairman as well as being a long-standing member of the Steering Committee. He also received the Villanova University President’s Forum medallion for his commitment to Villanova’s mission of academic excellence and moral values in higher education.
