Letter From the Chairman

Dear Colleague:

That could describe the bloating calendar of banking conferences during a year. It also describes our customers’ view of financial services providers. So many choices, so little time.

And we haven’t made this easier for ourselves. For example, our research shows that small business bankers and branch staff in banks of all sizes, from 20 branches to 2,000, can’t articulate compelling or consistent answers to the question, "why should I bank with you." Additional research from First Manhattan Consulting Group suggests that banks whose management teams and employees can answer the question, "why should I bank with you," consistently with the same message perform better financially.

And we've multiplied the problem by carpet-branching neighborhoods to achieve the network effect. Townspeople and small business owners in hamlets small to large HAVE discovered the traffic-deadening effect bank branches create in town centers and retail districts. While bank branches fall lower on NIMBY scales than cement plants and car washes, our customers and prospects are telling us, "enough is enough" -- they see little value to having yet another bank branch or another small business banker added to those already there.

During this year’s American Banker and Risk Management Association’s 13th Annual Small Business Banking Conference on October 26-28 at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego, we’ll focus on Communicating the Value – Positioning Our Message, and Delivering the Promise for the banking industry, as a whole, and for individual banks.

This year's Small Business Banking Conference agenda includes topics in the following areas:

  • Crafting and communicating value propositions
  • Channels and new products
  • Leveraging the web to create communities
  • Small business marketing
  • Regulatory Compliance

Not only that, we will be just minutes away from beautiful downtown San Diego. Come for the weekend before the conference, then immerse yourself with friends eager to share stories and learn. What's not to like?

Put yourself together. Put your plans together. Join us in October for Communicating the Value at the 13th Annual Small Business Banking Conference.

Nick Miller
